Lights

Buy lights that have been tested by an independent testing agency such as Underwriters Laboratories.

Use decorative lights rated for “indoor” and “outdoor” only in their designated areas.
Inspect decorations before plugging them in, checking for frayed or loose wires and loose connections.
Throw away lights with cracked or frayed cords.
Turn off all decorative lights before you leave the premises or go to bed.
Don’t overload extension cords or electrical outlets.

Christmas Trees

Choose a fresh-cut tree that’s not shedding its needles — and water it often.
Artificial trees should be fire resistant.
Keep trees away from fireplaces, stoves and other heat sources.

Decorations

Buy ornaments that are nonflammable.
For the safety of children and pets, choose decorations that are unbreakable.
Select wrapping paper, paper tablecloths and crepe paper made of fire-resistant and nontoxic materials.

Fireplaces

Make sure your chimney flue is open before using.
Use a safety screen for protection from flames and embers.
Never leave a fire or smoldering embers unattended.

Candles

Place candles in sturdy containers or holders and keep them on solid surfaces where they cannot be knocked over.
Lit candles should not be left unattended.
Keep candles away from trees, draperies and other flammable items.
Keep candles and matches well out of children’s reach.

Smoke Detectors

Check batteries regularly to make sure smoke detectors are working.
Replace batteries annually.

Other Safety Tips

Keep portable heaters at least three feet away from furniture, bedding, walls, clothing and other flammable items.

Choose gifts made of fire-resistant and nontoxic materials.
For children under 3, buy toys and gifts that can’t be swallowed, aren’t sharp, aren’t too large to handle and aren’t easily broken.

At holiday parties, do not drink alcoholic beverages if you intend to drive.
