If you are are a man affected by a receding hairline or a bald patch, you are going to be wanting an effective way to treat baldness so that you can keep looking young as long as possible.

First let's be clear that there are different kinds of baldness. There is complete alopecia which can happen at any age, develops quickly and often results in the person having no hair anywhere, not just on the head. This can be caused by cancer treatments, by stress, disease or sometimes has an unknown cause. In the case of cancer therapy, the hair usually grows back when the treatment is over. In other cases it may or it may not. There is no real treatment for this type of baldness and most people either live with it or wear a wig.

What we will be considering here is Male Pattern Baldness, which happens gradually to many men as they get older (sometimes starting right after adolescence) and is inherited. The hairline recedes on the forehead and sometimes a bald patch develops at the crown. Women may also find their hairline receding but it tends to start at a later age and they do not get the patch of baldness on the top of the head.

The reason for this type of baldness is simple. Hair is grown by follicles, which are all over the body. Some follicles create thicker, longer hairs than others. Those are the hairs that we can easily see. A follicle will produce a certain number of hairs over the lifetime of the person. The follicles are affected by sex hormones, and that is why we grow hair on some parts of the body at adolescence, when these hormones start to be active. As we progress through life the changing levels of hormones mean that in some people, certain follicles stop producing hairs. When that happens to all the follicles in a particular area, the result is a bald patch.

Although Male Pattern Baldness is hereditary, there are ways to treat it. You may choose transplants, FDA approved medications like Propecia or Minoxidil, or the natural alternative Saw Palmetto. All of these can be effective in keeping back the tide of hair loss for a majority of men and sometimes even helping it to grow back.

Hairpieces or toupees are another alternative. Although there are a lot of jokes about these, their application methods have improved a lot in recent years and it is something to consider. Be sure to get something that is a good fit to your hair color (including percentage of gray if you have some) and texture, and be aware that you will need a new one if your hair continues to recede. A professional fitting is highly recommended.

There is no doubt that a man who is losing his hair at a young age will look older than his years as a result. It is also true that a good head of hair on a middle aged man makes him look younger, especially if he is not yet gray. So if you are looking for ways to hold back the years, considering how to treat baldness will be important.
